After nearly two decades as a cornerstone of the RuneScape private server (RSPS) community, RuneLocus has officially rebranded to RuLocus. While it may seem like a subtle tweak—just two letters removed—the shift marks a strategic decision to modernize, universalize, and safeguard the platform’s identity in an increasingly uncertain RSPS landscape.
The new domain is now live at https://www.rulocus.com, and existing links from the old domain will continue to redirect—for now. However, the team behind RuLocus strongly advises server owners to update their callback URLs and API integrations to avoid potential disruptions in the future.
“It’s a small change. A big step,” the announcement reads. “A name that’s easier, cleaner, more universal—and one that works for everyone, even if we still need a moment to get used to it ourselves.”
What’s Changing?
Technically, very little—at least for now. RuLocus continues to offer the same features: server toplists, vote tracking, and community tools. The change is almost entirely cosmetic and strategic: a shorter domain, a modernized identity, and a subtle distancing from any direct RuneScape branding.
However, users are reminded that the old domain may not be supported indefinitely:
“Please: take a moment, delete 2 letters, and future-proof your callback connection,” the team urges RSPS owners.
Why the Name Change?
While RuLocus has not directly cited legal reasons for the rebrand, it comes at a time when Jagex has stepped up its enforcement efforts against RSPS-related domains. Several high-profile takedowns and legal warnings have put long-running RSPS sites on edge. In this context, dropping the “Rune” prefix and embracing a more neutral brand could be seen as both a modernization and a protective move.
“We’ve been exploring a rebrand for a while now,” RuLocus explains. “As we looked to broaden our scope and modernize the platform, we knew it was time for a name that’s more universal, more future-proof, and frankly—easier for everyone to get behind.”
Why No Advance Warning?
According to RuLocus, the decision to skip a build-up or teaser campaign was intentional. After 18 years of community service, the team understands the RSPS community’s relationship with change—and opted for action over discussion.
“If there’s one thing we’ve learned in 18 years of running this website, it’s that people don’t like change—even when it’s for the better,” they wrote. “So, we made the change cleanly and quietly.”
What Should Server Owners Do?
- Update your callback URLs to use
https://www.rulocus.com
instead of the old domain. - Check any scripts or integrations for references to
runelocus.com
. - Bookmark the new domain and share it with your community to avoid confusion.
A Platform Looking Forward
Though the RuneLocus name may be fading, the platform’s mission and community commitment remain unchanged.
“We’re not going anywhere—just continuing under a new, more universal name,” the RuLocus team affirms. “Same service. Same focus. New name.”
For veterans of the RSPS scene, this is the end of an era—but also the beginning of a new one. Whether RuLocus eventually expands its scope beyond RSPS or further refines its offerings under its new identity remains to be seen.
